  Barbara Johns – A Student Leader 16 year old African American Barbara Johns led a high school strike in 1951 demanding a better Black high school school in Farmville, VA.

Above is a photo of one side of the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial on the grounds of the Virginia State Capitol. It features eighteen statues of leaders in the Civil Rights movement on four sides of a rectangular granite stone block. This memorial was opened in July 2008.
